       The Washington Superior Court is the state's court of general jurisdiction.  It has exclusive original jurisdiction over all civil matters where the amount in controversy exceeds $50,000.  The court's criminal jurisdiction covers felonies and any other criminal violations not otherwise provided for by law.  The Washington District Court has jurisdiction over civil cases where the amount is less than $50,000 and in small claim cases up to $4,000.  The criminal jurisdiction includes traffic offenses and cases involving punishment up to one year confinement and/or a fine up to $5,000.   The Washington Municipal Court has exclusive original jurisdiction over violations of municipal ordinances.

       Superior Court Judges and District Court Judges are chosen in nonpartisan elections for four-year terms.  Municipal Court Judges may be either elected or appointed.
