       The Superior Court of California is the court of general trial jurisdiction.  It has original jurisdiction over all criminal cases, including felonies, misdemeanors, and traffic violations.  The civil jurisdiction covers all general matters, plus family law, probate, and juvenile cases, as well as violations of city and town ordinances.  The appellate jurisdiction of the California Superior Court covers misdemeanors, and civil cases up to $25,000.  Appeals are heard by a special three-judge appellate panel in each county, but may also be transferred to the California Court of Appeals.  Superior Court Judges are chosen for a six-year term in a nonpartisan election.
